Microsoft Azure is a fast, reliable, secure and flexible public cloud computing platform that provides Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), Platform as a Service (PaaS) and Software as a Service (SaaS) solution that can be used for analytics, virtual computing, networking and many more services.

Azure Subscriptions

In order for you to make full use of Azure services, a subscription is needed. An Azure Subscription ties all your billings to a single account for all Azure resources being used. A subscription is linked to an Azure account, which in turn is an identity in Azure Active Directory (AD). Therefore, a subscription is an agreement between an organization and Microsoft to use resources, for which charges are either paid on a per-license basis or a cloud-based, resource-consumption basis.

There are three main Azure subscriptions:

  • Free Account: This free account gives you unrestricted access to all Azure resources for a 12 month period with a free $200 credit for paid products. A credit card is needed for creating this account for identification purpose. After this period, all resources and services are disabled unless upgraded to a paid subscription.
  • Pay-as-you-go: You can convert a free account to a pay-as-you-go account. On this account, you pay for services on a monthly basis through your credit or debit card. You only pay for what you use. No hidden charges.
  • Student Account: Start free with $100 credit to use for 12 months in getting popular services. After you run out of credit, you can either upgrade to a pay-as-you-go account or wait till the 12 months expires if you’re still a student. No credit card required.

Why go for an Azure Subscription?

  1. High availability on a global scale: Cloud computing comes with one important advantage; global availability. It also has the option to integrate seamlessly with tools like Office 365 and Oracle.
  2. You only pay for what you use: Microsoft’s pay-as-you-go model enables businesses to only spend for what they use. With this, you won’t need to spend money on additional hardware and IT maintenance, thereby reducing operation cost.
  3. Data Security and Disaster Recovery: Unlike any other cloud computing platform, Azure can help you protect your data. It offers single click backup support for SQL database and virtual machines you run on your system.
  4. Automatic Updates: On Azure, real-time updates are carried out automatically. This means that your infrastructure and apps are always ready for use. You can manage Windows and Linux hardware updates in both on-premise and cloud environments, assess their status and manage process updates for your servers too.
  5. Scalability: With Microsoft Azure, you can easily adapt to the ever changing circumstances of your business. Its flexible features works both on a manual and auto scaling basis, in line with the application usage demand. Scaling is much easier in Azure because you can change to different service plans depending on your needs.
